“The Overending” begins with an escape from a castle via a balloon, and from there the story keeps climbing. Many comparisons come to mind, with “The Hobbit” meets “The Lord of the Rings” at the top of mind. But there is also an unbelievably rich world at hand in the fantastical wood cow world, where creatures assume metaphorical importance as they try to survive “slavers” and bandits at every turn. “The Overending” lives up to the promise of the first book, with (happily) the promise of many more to come.

Who would have thought a book about animals would be so colorful and interesting?
Did not get into and could not finish.
I haven't experienced such fascinating characters since Alice in Wonderland and these heroes are more heroic and these villains are more villainous than those in Wonderland!
Many thanks to Rick Johnson, for once again giving us another great Wood Cow Chronicles book, “The Overending”, in which many social issues are brought to light through his amazing characters. I love the strength and spirit of his animal characters to help those that are in need of help. This is not only a great book for individual reading, but I also highly recommend it for a family read with so many opportunities to use the animals to discuss current life issues. Now I am waiting for Book 3!

The Overending is an enjoyable, engaging and satisfying story, whether on its own, or as Book 2 in a series of ongoing Chronicles.

I feel in love with Helga, the amazing teenage courageous heroine who managed to find the strength to undergo the worst and produce the best from eveyone. Now, beginning with Emil's wild icy ride, the adventures of these two siblings take one turn after another in a complex tapestry of land and sea adventures. Realistic characters, except of course they are animals, but in this world these are the population engage in enthralling and life-challenging adventures. This is a not to miss sequel, making a series to rival the best of the fantasy storytellers. Rick Johnson is a highly skilled writer and knows how to make adventure and deep characters without any of the drawbacks of the poor morals and language that plague most of modern fiction. This is a book parents can trust to engage and inspire their children, and of course, not to miss for the adults in the family too!
