Other readers have already commented on the powerful sense of atmosphere the author creates in this suspenseful, well-crafted mystery. I enjoyed that, too--I've never been to the Pacific Northwest, but I felt I got to know it better. I was even more struck by the perceptive, often moving portrayal of the characters and their relationships. The protagonist is truly admirable--not too perfect to be believable, but intelligent and principled, fully committed both to her family and to her work. The portrayal of her family strikes me as searching and compassionate. The conflicts are real, and so is the love holding the family together. I was also impressed by the dialogue. In too many novels, the dialogue seems forced, artificial, or just plain boring. Here, the dialogue feels utterly natural, helping to move the plot ahead steadily while also revealing character. In all, Grave Disturbance is an excellent novel that should appeal not only to mystery fans but also to readers in general.Product details

Grave Disturbance A Pacific Northwest Mystery Martha Crites 9780983571414 Books Reviews
I surely look forward to more by Martha Crites. As an inveterate reader of good mysteries, I always look for those that transcend the genre and this one does, indeed. Her protagonist has a fascinating job and telling the story in the first person is challenging, but rewards the reader.
While I have not spent much time in the Pacific Northwest, I felt like I did after reading this book. The descriptions of the mountains, the weather, and the scenery were very real. the story line was amazing and very gripping. I basically finished this book in three evenings and on the second evening I had a hard time putting it down even though it was 1 am and I needed to be up by 6! I can really see this novel being adapted into a screenplay. Curious who would play the lead!
Grave Disturbance is intelligently and compassionately written. While paced slower than a page-turner, the cozy aspects of this debut should earn Crites many new readers, especially for the relatable main character. I'm particularly impressed by the author's humane portrayal of mental illness. A recommended read, definitely!
Some people want to save the ways of their ancestors for their grandchildren and some want only to serve their own desires. This author's first novel examines these opposites and weaves the clash of cultures into a grand story of murder and intrigue.
Fun well put together novel that kept me on the edge of my seat. I really enjoyed the book and having the tale occur here in the valley where I live was an added bonus. I passed my copy on to one of my neighbors who also loved it and then passed on to one of hers.
I truly loved how all of the characters felt real and complex, and the great sense of place. Also that the story is told from the perspective of a protagonist whose job is to determine if a person should be committed, and the personal and societal ramifications of her decisions. She sees the people she is evaluating in a context that is wider than starkly mentally ill or homeless. In addition to enjoying the read, I found myself thinking about it a lot afterwards, particularly when reading news stories about the same issues.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this intriguing mystery. The characters are believable and the prose skillful. Although the book dealt with Native American graves, I didn't feel the author was preaching. I loved the setting. I got a real sense of place where rain is pretty constant.
