Since Kitty's Greatest Hits is all Vaughn all the time, the anthology has a better flow to it even with a mix of different types of stories than typical multi-author collections do. A lot of these stories have been previously published, but even though Vaughn promised a few new ones - including a brand new Cormac story - and some hard to find ones originally appeared in magazines, I was still surprised to find there were actually a few more new-to-me-ones here than I'd expected. I was also surprised that I actually enjoyed most of the oldies more on the second read as well. As bonus - and I thought this was especially interesting - there's section at the back of the book which includes a discussion of the stories and their purpose. So for me that extra insight, plus the new novella length Cormac story, made Kitty's Greatest Hits worth the read.

Il Est Ne (in Wolfsbane and Mistletoe) - Facing a lonely Christmas in a diner, Kitty helps another werewolf recapture his humanity. I think I liked this one better the second time 'round, since I wasn't expecting a slice of the series and the shifter's plight is very sympathy stirring.

A Princess of Spain (in The Secret History of Vampires) - Not a Kitty story, instead a vampire plays a part in a historical story involving Catherine of Spain and King HenryVIII - this was okay but didn't really seem to belong here

Conquistador de la Noche (Subterranean Online, Spring 2009) Vampire Rick's background is explored a bit here, this was interesting and I would love more of Rick.

Book of Daniel (Talebones #39, Winter 2009) - A twist to the story of Daniel and the lions - I liked this one but again, it didn't really fit in a Kitty anthology.

Temptation of Robin Greene (in Mammoth Book of Paranormal Romance) - A woman who is essentially a crypto-zookeeper falls for one of her charges - When I read this the first time, I didn't realize that the vampire was Kitty's friend Rick, I think that helped up my enjoyment of the story as well.

Looking After Family (Realms of Fantasy, February 2007) - A Cormac and Ben origins story, it was fun to see the start of cousins' relationship when they were teens.

God's Creatures (in Dark and Stormy Knights) - Cormac hunts a beast on the edge of becoming a man killer, it is interesting to see a slight shift in Cormac's black and white world view in this day in in his oddball life story

Wild Ride ( in Running with the Pack ) - This is TJ's back story - I've always like TJ, this is pretty short, I would have liked more.

Winnowing the Herd (Strange Horizons, Oct. 16, 2006)- a Kitty prequel, actually just a really short scene with a horror feel to it.

Kitty and the Mosh Pit of the Damned (Weird Tales #338) - Kitty goes to a club gig to get and interview with a band whose concerts are hell on fans - this was a nice little carve out vignette, Kitty manages to get into trouble wherever she goes.

Kitty's Zombie New Year (in Weird Tales #345) - Afraid of spending another boring New Year's Eve alone, and attends a party she'll never forget - I really liked this one and Vaughn's twist on the zombie mythos.

Life Is the Teacher (in Hotter than Hell) - connected to Kitty Goes to Washington, this stars vampire Emma working to become independent after her 'change of life' - I enjoyed this story so much more this time around, even though the ending is a bit bittersweet - but I was relieved that it didn't have the more horror-ish ending that I misremembered.

You're on the Air (new)- connected to Kitty and the Silver Bullet, One of Kitty's callers plays the hand he was dealt - very short but it's nice see a Joe-regular-guy vamp rail against the stereotype and to see him finally get a break.

Long Time Waiting (new) - The story of how prison 'changed' Cormac - this story is a bit heftier lengthwise and we really get a good look inside his head and find out what happened while he was off screen in the last few books. This one was long enough to be a satisfying Cormac fix.

I admit, I didn't investigate thoroughly enough when I saw this title; I saw "Carrie Vaughn" and "Kitty" and went, "Oooh a new one. I must have it!!" So, that part? My bad. Let the buyer beware, and all that.

So, ahem, yes. They're short stories, and not all "Kitty." Calling this book HER greatest hits really is a little misleading, in my opinion.

All right, so after my initial surprise when the first story just ENDED -- d'oh! -- and I finally snapped to the realization that others already know, I was disappointed. Short stories, not my favorite. I like to really immerse myself in the world of a book, so the quick conclusion to some of the stories is too abrupt for my tastes. Again, my opinion.

Then I went on to read some of the non-Kitty related stories. Hmmm.

While I recognize these are well written, the ones not really even peripherally related to Kitty or her storyline are less than satisfying to me. It's like ordering a Coke and getting a Diet Pepsi. It's not bad, but it's not what you wanted.

I gave this book four stars mostly because of the Cormac and T.J. back stories.
The Kitty Norville series has remained strong throughout its run thus far. I always look forward to a new Kitty book and since I haven't read any of her short stories I was extremely excited for her collected short story collection "Kitty's Greatest Hits". What sent me into pre-order mania was learning that Cormac's prison story "Long Time Waiting" was included. Cormac, oh, Cormac! Cormac may be my favorite male character in any series, ever. Yes, he is that awesome. He is tough but vulnerable (which we see handled beautifully in the prison story). He has feeling for Kitty, and I still believe Kitty has feeling for Cormac too, but the timing just never worked out. There is "electricity" between them that is missing between Kitty and her husband Ben. Cormac is resigned to watch Kitty and Ben together since he loves his cousin very much as well and believes they are better off together. In the series Cormac went away to prison (due to a crime he committed to save Kitty) and we had limited Cormac scenes all the way up until a couple of books ago when he was released from prison...and carrying the spirit of a woman named Amelia inside of him.

"Long Time Waiting" fills a lot of holes by explaining how Cormac came to be sharing his body with Amelia's spirit. I have to state for the record that I don't really like this plotline and I want Amelia expunged from Cormac ASAP, but I did really enjoy this story. We get access to Cormac's feelings about being in prision and his feelings for Kitty and Ben. We share his worries and relive his father's death through his memories of when he was sixteen. This is the longest offering in the compilation and it alone is worth the price of the book. This is a must read for fans of the Kitty series.

Often in short story collections or anthologies, there are only a couple great stories and the rest are fillers. That is not the case with "Kitty's Greatest Hits". There is not a single bad apple in this batch. Some are better than others and some fit in with the Kitty world theme better than others but each and every one is worth reading. I will give a brief overview of some of the highlights in this book.

Il Es Ne - A cute werewolf story featuring Kitty helping a brand new wolf over the holidays.

Conquistador de le Noche - Absolutely a favorite and another must read for fans of the series. This story tells how Rick became a vampire. I loved how strong a person Rick was straight from the beginning. I will mention this was probably one of the most disturbing stories.

Looking After Family - This is a background on how Cormac came to be live with Ben's family and specifically how the bond built between the two of them.

Kitty and the Mosh Pit of the Damned- Awesome short story about Kitty's involvement with a band that seems to induce violence in its concert goers.

Kitty's Zombie New Year- This one was a little too short and sweet but was still fun to read. A strange guest shows up at a New Years Eve party and Kitty tries to discover what is wrong with the girl.

Temptation of Robin Greene This one really stayed with me for awhile. Robin works in a paranormal laboratory where she takes care of a vampire (Rick!), werewolf, mermaid and more. One day she meets the newest lab specimen, a male selkie. I loved Rick in this story and the plot was fantastic. I wish there was more of this story.

Wild Ride - This is T.J.'s story that tells about how he became a werewolf. I liked it but it would have been more relevant if we still saw some of T.J. in the series.

God's Creatures - Another story about Cormac. Here he is on the hunt to find something that is killing local livestock.

You're On the Air- We get to see a scene from one of the early Kitty books through the eyes of an average vampire named Jake. This is a really cute story.
