The Adventures of Superhero Girl Faith Erin Hicks Rachel Edidin Books

As I more and more veer away from mainstream comics I try to get my four color fix by leaning on the indies. I poke into nooks and crannies and turn over rocks trying to find the hidden gem and the lightning in a bottle. And, shazam!, I stumbled across Faith Erin Hicks. I am over the moon about her stuff - like The War at Ellsmere,Friends with Boys,Brain Camp,Zombies Calling!,Nothing Can Possibly Go Wrong - but, to me, she's legend because of THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERHERO GIRL.

One of the neat things about THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERHERO GIRL is that it allows you to pretty much pick any place as a jumping on point. Some of the stories cling to a larger arc, but mostly you can read it as a series of one-offs. It's a webcomic that was originally created for a Canadian Nova Scotia newspaper called The Coast. And it's available online for free. Still, I encourage you to buy this Dark Horse-published collection as a show of support. Faith Erin Hicks works hard, puts out fantastic content, and deserves your having her back.

I can't really go into great detail about Superhero Girl because a huge part of the magic is your reading about her for the first time and learning what she's all about. I will say that her super powers are generic, but that her super powers are the least of what makes her awesome. Her story may be bombastic on the surface, but beneath the cape & cowl stuff is a mirroring of our everyday lives. This volume showcases snapshots of moments in the life of Superhero Girl. She fights bank robbers and ninjas and behemoths and she does get media coverage. But then there's her civilian life that frequently encroaches into her crime-fighting career. Superhero Girl is a broke chick, not homeless only because of the largesse of her cool roommate. She's super awkward in parties. She feels underappreciated and resents her perfect big brother Kevin. She's this close to naming the Skeptical Guy as her archnemesis. It's her flaws that make her relatable, and Hicks is steadfast in presenting these flaws with insight and with gentle humor. I love it that, half the time, Superhero Girl forgets to take off her mask. I love it that she laments Canada's low crime rate. I even love it that she doesn't seem to have a name outside of Superhero Girl.

Dark Horse has put out a handsome hardback edition, presented in landscape format. The original black and white strips have been converted to full color by Cris Peter. Bonus stuff includes Kurt Busiek's wonderfully gushy foreword and 5 pages of original sketches, including the very first Superhero Girl comic. Faith Erin Hicks has got a knack for observational humor and the artistic expressiveness to realize it on a visual platform. Her artwork delights. I have endless favorites in this volume but, if cornered, I'd say the one that really sold me about this webcomic is the one in which our gal and a ninja have an awkward encounter in the supermarket. That sequence perfectly embodies the humanity and the humor and the quirk of this series. THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERHERO GIRL is strongly for all ages. If you've a daughter for whom you'd been looking for appropriate reading material, this is the one, yo. Even my buddy, Hal, is enamored with this series, and he's a Canadian ninja.

My daughters new favorite book. She laughed so hard.
My 11 year old read this in an afternoon, and keeps re-reading it.
Teen girl \ young adult dealing with life while being a superhero. Told in comic strip fashion. Story & charter development top notch, plus humor is right on. I bought this for my Nieces after reading this (14 & 11) they loved it . Give it a go you won't be disappointed ...
I am nine years old. I think this book was really interesting and funny. The characters have funny personalities. And it's a book that I would read over and over again. I would recommend it for like 8–12-year-olds. My older sister liked it too.
Following the daily life a super hero struggling to make her way in a world that doesn't always believe in her. Wonderful story, would be glad to see more of this heroine or any other that the author puts forward. Great gift idea for any girl or young woman in your life.
I wasn't familiar with the web series. I knew nothing of Ms. Hicks' work. I only knew that I liked graphic novels and that Busiek, one of my favorite comic writers, recommended it. I was expecting a graphic novel. Instead, I found comic strips that were delightful and charming and funny. Love the art and the humor and the fact that it was a lot more sophisticated and thoughtful than I expected it would be.

Have big plans to learn more about the author's work.

Such a great book! I read a review from a dad who wanted a comic book for his 8 year old that didn't over sexualize women. This is great. I got it for my 6 year old daughter and she carries it everywhere with her. Her brother who is 4 also loves it and she shows it to all her friends (who also love it). She has read these stories multiple times and is still entertained by it. She also wants to be a super hero so that's awesome. I'd recommend this book because it's just a lovely comic to start your kids on!
