Very interesting account of life in Austria during WW1, but mainly the difficulties after the Armistice signing. This remarkable woman tells of the struggles to feed her family during the food blockade which resulted in people starving. Her drive to provide food, heat and care for her adult children and grandchildren are descriptively told. She had many sorrows herself her husband died, one son went missing during the war, another son was blinded, her son-in-law lost both legs, her daughter got TB and eventually died, leaving an infant daughter and young son. The severe rationing of food and coal caused them to be hungry in cold homes with only one room allowed to be lighted and heated. The 'Food Police' searched homes to make sure food was not being hoarded-even a tiny bit. Hyperinflation resulted in 2.5 pounds of sugar costing 12,000 kronen - about the equivalent of $12,000 American dollars and 2.5 pounds of rice costing 10,000 kronen, or about $10,000 USD! The diary is well written so one gets a clear picture of life in Austria during those horrendous years.
