I loved everything about this book…
The characters were realistic and complex and Barnard really nails their teenage voices.
Barnard does a great job with Suzanne’s character. It would have been tempting to overplay Suzanne’s personality and sensationalise her backstory. Instead we – along with Caddy – slowly learn more and more about the ‘damaged’ young woman who’s come to live with her aunt after a family crisis.
The novel is essentially about the arrival of Suzanne and impact it has on Caddy and Rosie. Suzanne’s beautiful and had far more life experience than her new best friends. Caddy – in particular – is insanely jealous of Suzanne, before falling under her spell.
Barnard allows Suzanne to slowly unburden herself in a way that doesn’t sensationalise or diminish what she’s been through.
Friendship is a key theme of this novel. I know people who think 3-way friendships never work as there’s always someone left out. I’m not sure this is the case, but it’s certainly a minefield under negotiation here. But despite that we’re reminded how powerful and affirming friendship can be.
Unsurprisingly – for a novel about teenage girls and young women – confidence and self-worth also feature strongly. In fact, for me this was integral.
This novel is beautifully written. It’s addictive in many ways. Readers are swept up in this story of the girls, wrapped effortlessly in informal but lyrical – almost mesmerising – prose.
So… in case you didn’t get it the first two times… I loved this beautiful book and can’t recommend it highly enough.

You know when you start one of those books that you just know, you have an inner gut feeling "This is gonna be a good 'un?"
Well, let me tell you, this surely is.
This brings out emotions in you constantly from laughter to tears of sadness.
The main characters are Caddy, Rosie and Suzanne.
You know or remember, those feelings you had as a teenager, wanting, no...needing to be accepted by your peers. Wanting everyone to 'like' you.
All those confusing thoughts that go on inside your head and worrying about what others might think. Well, this is a story unlike any other I have read lately as its not a romance in the true sense of this. This is about mental health, this is about family, this is about friendship.
What happens when a best buddy breaks your heart?
Follow it, sense it, live it. It will make you cry.
Beautifully written and a fabulous debut novel from this author.
I cannot wait to see what else she writes.
*My thanks to Pan Macmillan via Net Galley for my copy to read and review*
I always have mixed experiences with YA contemporaries, but I was drawn to this cover and blurb like a bee to honey. And to be honest, I initially really enjoyed reading it. The first thing that stands out is the writing style, which is very engaging and makes it very easy to read this story. I found myself literally flying through the pages at first. Even though the plot itself isn't all that special and nothing I haven't seen before in the genre, I had a great time reading it. There are quite a few high school cliches involved though which I could have done without as well as the jealousy and the whole new friend/third wheel theme. I had mixed feelings about the characters and as the story continued especially Caddy really started to bother me. Both her attitude and her idea that having bad things happen to you make you more interesting is not only frustrating but almost offensive. It's one of the reasons I started to enjoy Beautiful Broken Things less and less and ended up having to give a lot lower rating than I initially suspected. Sure, Suzanne's character is quite interesting and opens the way to talk about important themes as abuse and its consequences and mental health, but her reactions are also almost cliche at points and I'm not sure I'm happy with the final developments and the ending. All in all it wasn't the reading experience I was hoping for... Beautiful Broken Things had a quite strong start because of the enjoyable writing style, but didn't manage to convince me in the end. Part of the problem might have been me, so if you love the genre and don't mind cliches it's still worth giving a go.
Great book
My daughter thought it was a good book.
This book is so good. It is a really different take on a love story which is truly intriguing.
